Since one can use any leader strength (and a large fly (see above)) as the rod becomes progressively overmatched by the forces one can use with heavy leaders on big fish, one progressively points the rod lower and lower....to keep from breaking it......taking more and more of the force directly on the reel and rod hand as a DIRECT PULL, until in the final sense of NO rod, one is handlining the fish
